Farewell 2021

Second year of the "corona age" is coming to an end. Perhaps an even stranger year than the previous one, a mix of pale hopes, chaos, disillusions, mistrust, discord, disbelief...

Unfortunately, I think the past two years are the proof that mankind just lacks the ability to handle a serious global level problem, and there are other bigger problems to handle in the years to come.

On a more optimistic note, it was a really good year for me personally. First of all, I'm thankful that me and my beloved ones are well and healthy. I got to travel this year a lot more than I dared to hope. I saw new awesome places (the Faroe islands), but I also revisited places that are very dear to me (Iceland and Madeira). I got to see an active volcano, which is a childhood dream come true. Even now I can feel the infernal heat of the lava flow that was just a few meters from me, the sulphur and burnt vegetation smell, the sheer awe on everyone's faces, no picture or video can really prepare you for that experience.

Unfortunately, for various reasons, this year I didn't go out in the mountains as often as last years, I definitely want to change this next year. I really miss a sunset on a mountain top, a night in my tent, I even miss carrying my backpack.

I managed to fulfill another dream of mine, to be able to see and take pictures from a bird's eye perspective. I'm still learning to master the new toy, but it puts a big smile on my face every time I fly around.

Unfortunately, I'm still way behind on selecting and processing the ever growing stack of images that I've gathered throughout the years, but it's work in progress and hopefully next year I'll finally able to have a portfolio containing my best photographs.

Here are some images that I've made or processed throughout this year.

Farewell 2020

Cateva imagini adunate de-a lungul anului:

"January - February - Lockdown- December", one among many online jokes that pictures 2020. A strange year, that changed our lifestyles, our perception of the world, scrambled all our plans and showed us the frailty of the balance our society is built upon. Personally, I'm grateful that me, my family and friends are healthy, I send my warmest wishes to the ones less fortunate.

The lockdown gave me an opportunity to browse the evergrowing collection of colored memories, but unfortunately I didn't manage to select a portfolio, well there's always next year for that :) I went to my dear Carpathians as often as I could (during the lockdown months I literally dreamed of them). I only travelled out of the country once (in Croatia), had a beautiful autumn and so far we're still waiting for the real winter to come.

Farewell 2019

Sper sa nu urmeze ani in care vom admira albul iernii si culorile toamnei doar in poze si amintiri.

Time to take a look back to the year that's coming to an end. In 2019 I continued travelling, exploring and photographing, although it seems to me that the first years' enthusiasm has tempered a bit.
In April I visited northern Spain, an impressive place, where the ocean modeled the limestone shores, creating marvelous spots. It became a tradition to spend Easter holidays anywhere but home, and I have a feeling that 2020 will make no exception.
In August I made a short trip to the Bulgarian seashores, I really enjoyed the wild and quiet beaches, definitely worth another visit sometimes.
In September I greeted the northern autumn in Iceland. We went around the island once again, this time including the Westfjords, we had an unexpected mild and pleasant weather. The main highlights were the vast volcanic landscapes covered in autumn painted vegetation, the tranquility of the western fjords (far less visited by tourists than the other parts of Iceland), the bright show of the lady aurora dancing in the night sky, the selenar volcanic landscape of the north, the windy day that almost dragged our little car off the road, our last night in the tent when we had to leave at 4 a.m. because of the storm... all in all, a typical Icelandic experience.
Other than that, I wandered around the Carpathians, although a lot less than I'd like. One of the new year's resolutions is to be on the mountains more often, to let aside all problems and pretexts that kept me away from them this year. Even though, now that I think about it, the weather conditions were one of these reasons. This year, the great change became more than obvious, the seasons seem to lose their individualities, their magic and colors. I really hope in the future we won't have to look to our photo albums or memories to see winter's white or autumn colors.
